Better than Birthstones
Some birthstones are more practical than others. January’s garnet, for example, is relatively inexpensive, easy to come by, and generally has a tasteful appearance in jewelry. April’s diamond, on the other hand, is a stone that might not be as easily given to someone for their birthday. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make everyone feel special with a gift that is specific to them. Crystals can represent personality traits or interests in ways that are even more unique and thoughtful than a birthstone’s connection to a given month.
There are tons of resources about different stones and how their energies affect us. Here are some of our favorite stones:
Kyanite:
Sometimes called, the “stone of alignment,” it is said that kyanite can align all the chakras, bringing balance and harmony to the wearer, especially while dreaming.
Topaz:
Smoky topaz is said to be a root chakra stone, with qualities of grounding and protection. An ideal stone for anyone who often ventures to new places.
Labradorite:
This stone can help the mind find a path towards reaching goals. Legend has it that labradorite stone comes from the fallen frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis. And judging by its luminescent quality, it’s easy to see why.
Sodalite / Serpentine:
Sometimes called, “poet’s stone,” sodalite supports mental clarity, while serpentine is linked to emotional balance. The combination of these two stones is the perfect tool to help the wearer focus on their most creative work.
An alternative to the birthstone tradition, semi-precious stones, minerals and crystals are a new spin that can complement the energies, activities, and uniqueness of a close friend. So if diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies are not in the budget this year, consider a crystal that holds a symbolic meaning to represent the personality of the person you’re giving it to.
