It's a highly skilled and labor-intensive method of hand-printing fabric. The artisans first carve a wooden block, one for each color in the pattern. Dyes are often mixed from foraged plants, then they sketch the cloth with the design, then carefully imprint it with the block. The printer moves from left to right, with the dye on the design block stamping it onto the cloth. This is repeated to cover the entire cloth with the intended design and colors. Then they lay it in the sun to dry.
